Kodak were one of the original pioneers in film photography and as such have over 1000 patents connected with imaging that have held them in good stead as the market has moved towards digital imaging. And many of the developments in digital cameras and camera phones have relied on those patents.
In November 2008 Kodak filed a suit that alleged that camera phones by both LG Electronics and Samsung violated some of those patents that Kodak had filed between 1993 and 2001; and rather typically, Samsung then countersued. A typical corporate case of ‘my laywer is bigger then your lawyer’.
After 14 months of wrangling the two sides have finally reached agreement after it was announced that Eastman Kodak Co had secured a licensing pact with Samsung, and would draw royalties from the South Korean company. As well as giving each company access to the others patents.
The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
