The Canon 60D just splashed onto the US market in August, 2010. Are there enough significant differences to warrant a Canon 60D vs Canon Rebel T2i digital shootout? You may be surprised as you read this article .
Canon has done something different with the development and release of the 60D. The name “Canon 60D” really belongs to a model that is an upgrade of the Canon 50D, but the 60D does not fit that spot. The truth is, considering the definition of the term “upgrade,” this new digital SLR does not fit the description.
It does, nevertheless, fit in that spot when all features are considered. Engineers have been working overtime during the past year, and it is obviously paying off “in spades” as the Canon T2i and the Canon 7D have done extremely well against all competitors.
It is quite interesting to look at the 60D vs T2i in comparison. When you think about the additional price of the 60D, it is of particular note that it shares the same 18mp sensor and body construction as the Rebel T2i, yet there are some features that are significant enough to increase the worth of the newer DSLR.
Canon has apparently set an unstated goal to bring video to the Digital SLR market. All three of its mid-range DSLR cameras that have been released during the past year have shared video as one of their top features. Actually, there is one more thing. The 60D has a new audio input capability which allows for better stereo input from two mics.
Other additions that appear to put the 60D into a category all its own include an articulating LCD panel. This is a first for Canon DSLRs. Video capture is made so much easier if it can be done without your eye having to be attached to the camera’s viewfinder.
Continuous image capture is yet another plus for the 60D vs T2i. The 60D has a frame rate of 5.3 fps vs 3.7 fps in the Rebel. This is significant when shooting things like sports.
Are you one who has difficulty getting your photos straight? If so, the new electronic level in the viewfinder of the 60D will make your photographic life complete.
Both cameras have a 9 point auto focus control, but the 60D has all 9 points with cross-type auto focus points whereas the T2i has only the center point as a cross-type focus point.
There is also an improved auto-ISO function which allows changing ISO settings very quickly and easily. And, oh yes, the wireless flash control, which is new as well. Of course, this does require the additional purchase of an external flash. Some very nice features indeed.
The Canon Rebel T2i is extremely popular right now, especially among photographers who are seeking an entry level digital SLR camera. It has the excellent image quality we come to expect from Canon SLR cameras, as well as some other fine features. Just check the user satisfaction at the online stores to see that the Rebel T2i is among the best sellers in the digital SLR category. Purchasing a Canon Rebel T2i is practically a sure winner.
And now the Canon 60D appears to be tarketing the same market. Whereas the 50D was aimed at the semi-pro market, the 60D has been downgraded in certain areas (like body construction and continuous shooting rate) so that semi-pros may no longer be interested.
