Everyone knows that photographing stars is big business.
Both when they DO want to be photographed. And, perhaps more lucratively, when they don’t… Such as on the beach, in their own homes, when out jogging and looking all sweaty (and not remotely like their publicists would want them too!)
Well, in California, the good times (for Paparazzi Photographers) could be about to come to an end with the signing into law by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger of a bill that enables ‘stars’ (in inverted commas because even the guy on a milk commercial seems to think they are a ‘star’ these days!) to sue media outlets if they use photographs when they could reasonably have expected privacy.
What this means in practice is anybodys guess. As not everyone will sue even when they appear to have good cause. Whilst others may sue with little cause.
What is for sure is that lawyers will be getting richer as a result.
Whether the causes of photography or privacy are furthered remains to be seen.
