Well, its official. It is now 2010.  The ‘noughties’ have passed us by and we are now into the ‘teens’.   What the coming years will bring in all spheres is very much unknown. We can but hypothise about the future. And that is equally true of photography.

I was reading an interesting blog post this morning from Clifford Oto, a photographer at the online record.  He thinks that digital cameras have ushered in a ‘Golden Age for Photography’ and offers up five main arguments to support his view:

1/ Prices are dropping and digital cameras are much easier to use then their film equivalents. You no longer have to be a technical geek to use a camera. You can get great results much more easily then at any time in the past.

2/ Guesswork and Waste has been eliminated – Because you can see the results on an LCD screen instantly, there is no need to waste film on wondering whether you got the best shot. You can just look and decide for yourself.

3/ Photo Accessibility is Greatly enhanced – You can instantly email photographs to people across the world.

4/ Storage Can Be More Secure – In theory we know this to be the case. But here is a case where the reality sometimes gets disconnected from the practicality. We all know that YOU CAN back up digital photographs very easily. But I fear that this is not as common as Clifford thinks.

My tip here get a backup drive, or try out Mozy.com for free online storage of up to 2GB.

5/ Photo Communication is now more powerful – Photo journalists in far flung places can now almost instantly let the outside world see their circumstances through the medium of photography.

What do you think?
