Panasonic is an up-and-coming manufacturer of compact digital cameras. The Panasonic Lumix ZS7 is one of their best and most highly regarded models.

The Panasonic Lumix ZS7 is an amazing compact digital camera, and there are a few reasons that make it so. No, make that 5 things to consider.

Prior to giving you the scoop on this wonderful Panasonic camera, you need to know that not every photographer chooses a Canon or Nikon camera. Even though they are the front runners in sales, it does not mean that they are the only ones who make great digital cameras. The truth is that the Panasonic company has produced excellent cameras in the compact digital market for quite some time. They have not done it with the pomp and flair of Canon and Nikon, but their quality and performance has been equal or better in some models.

I write this article because I am the owner of a Panasonic ZS7, and it has been an excellent digital camera, as I can attest to personally. Having been a Canon digital SLR owner for a long time now, I am not contending that a compact digital such as the ZS7 is a better camera than a digital SLR. That is not the point of this article. Practically everyone will admit that it is true. The simple fact that the sensor size of a DSLR is far bigger than that of a compact digital, and this fact alone makes it nearly impossible for a compact to out-perform a DSLR.

OK, that disclaimer is out of the way. Now let’s talk about the Panasonic Lumix ZS7.

Ease Of Use is the first thing that makes this camera special. There are a couple of reasons to buy compact cameras, and the most popular one is that they are “point and shoot”. Playing with dials, buttons, and camera settings does not compute with your idea of photography. This little Panasonic will fill the bill.

Image Quality is also a plus for the ZS7. If you realize that you will not get the pixel quality of a digital SLR, you will be far ahead of the game here. Truth is that compacts are getting better with every release. The ZS7 is ahead of the pack. I put mine through the paces and was extremely happy with the image results in every situation. As an added bonus, you can print huge photographs because of the 12-megapixel sensor. And if you choose the right printer, you can have them blown up as wall murals.

Third reason to buy is something called Intelligent Auto.  I absolutely LOVE this feature. Intelligent Auto is really intelligent. It’s as if the camera has a brain. It recognizes the proper settings for lighting and composition. How the camera knows it’s a people picture as opposed to a landscape, I have no idea, and I don’t care. It is nothing short of … well, magical. To me, the most intriguing part is how well it does with night photos. Another great facet of Intelligent Auto is that you can set it to No Flash and get excellent lighting in your photo. OMG, Intelligent Auto! Where have you been all my life?

Number 4 on the hit parade is the Super-Zoom lens. By Super Zoom, we are talking about a 12x zoom factor. That equates to 25mm – 300mm. Being a bit skeptical about the image quality of such a lens, I did a simple test. I took a picture at 25mm of a birdhouse in my yard, then zoomed to 300mm and took the same picture. To my surprise, they both had very good quality. I will say that they were not as sharp at my digital SLR image taken at the same time and place, but I already explained why this is true. I was quite happy with the results.  The quality of the lens can’t be questioned, since it is made by Leica, a very highly respected lens maker.

Fifth and finally is Price. I was looking for a great camera that I could carry everywhere without having to haul my massive camera bag along. I can carry the ZS7 anywhere and everywhere in  a pocket. The good news is that I found a camera that meets all my needs for about $250. I feel that is very reasonable for what I got in this camera.

For these reasons, I wholeheartedly recommend the Panasonic Lumix ZS7.
